Bawaal movie review: Director Nitesh Tiwari’s film ‘Bawal’, which tells stories like ‘Dangal’ and ‘Chhichhore’ on screen, has been released on Prime Video today. Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor starrer Yeh toh ek love-story hai, but not the usual love story of Hindi cinema, rather a bit different. And along with it, ‘World War 2’ used in the film means those glimpses of the Second World War which increase the excitement in this story. We saw all this in the trailer, but will this film take you from the streets of history to the square of entertainment, then let us tell you in this review.
what does the story say
This is the story of Ajju Bhaiya i.e. Ajay Dixit (Varun Dhawan) who has a different setting in Lucknow. For some, he ‘kept becoming a bus collector’ and for some, he ‘kept becoming an army officer’. He has told such stories to the whole city that set his atmosphere that everyone is crazy about his atmosphere. Although in reality, Ajju Bhaiya reluctantly teaches history to children in a school. He is married to Nisha i.e. Jahnavi Kapoor who was the perfect girl according to her status at the time of marriage and that is why Ajju Bhaiya married such a beautiful looking topper Nisha. But such a problem came in this marriage that Ajju Bhaiya started feeling this marriage as a ‘miss fire’ of his life. Now how does Ajju and Nisha’s train come back on track and whether a love story can flourish between them, this is the story of the film.
There is nothing in this marriage of Varun and Jahnavi even after 9 months.
what rattles
In the beginning of the story, the tempo of Ajju Bhaiya’s life has been set in the right way, but as the story progresses, the hollowness of Ajju Bhaiya’s personality starts appearing in this story as well. The real point of the story is Ajay getting so scared that he just finds a way to escape. But going to Europe to teach history to children, and spending 10-12 lakhs of a middle class father for this, this plot itself is a bit strange; Seems like. Trying to show today’s internal war through those stories by going to the places of World War 2 is a good effort, but the problem is that you are not able to convey or excite that much.
Although the pause and patience needed for a love story to ripen and flourish, you will get to see it very well in this film. While the first half of the story makes you laugh, there are many emotional scenes in the second half that make you think.
In the film, Ajay and Nisha go to the cities of Europe where World War 2 took place.
Director Nitesh Tiwari has shown us stories like ‘Dangal’ and ‘Chhichhore’, which have the magnetic power to watch and stay connected to the second scene after every scene. But ‘Bawal’ will not be able to join the league of Nitesh’s two previous films to advance that level. This looseness of the script is the biggest drawback of this film. Nikhil Mahrotra, Shreyas Jain, Piyush Gupta and Nitesh Tiwari himself have written this story together, but even these 4 together could not tighten it.
Varun and Jahrvi have appeared in the role of Ajay and Nisha in the film.
will the heart like
Talking about acting, this is the strongest side of this film. Varun Dhawan is totally in his character of Ajju Bhaiya. The nervousness that comes on his face due to the fear of tarnishing his image makes me want to believe him. Jhanvi Kapoor has proved through this film that she is constantly working to improve her craft. She has been very subtle in many scenes. In this character, Nisha had to make us feel more than speak and Jhanvi has done this work with utmost sincerity.
This story is a new and good effort, trying to understand the fight within us from the mistakes of history and to put it on the screen. Watching this film reminded me of Nitya Mehra’s 2016 film ‘Baar Baar Dekho’, which takes the help of going into the future to explain the mistakes in their relationships. That film of Siddharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif was a flop but ‘Bawal’ does the same thing by showing the stories of history. This film by director Nitesh Tiwari is a good experiment, provided a little more work could have been done on its story. This film must be seen once. 2.5 stars to this film from my side.
